Dr. Deshaies, Novant Health neurosurgeon, overcomes tough battle with COVID-19

Dr. Eric Deshaies

Until he was exposed to COVID-19, neurosurgeon Eric Deshaies, MD, would run, walk or cycle nearly 100 miles a week. A passionate health and wellness advocate, he understands the crucial benefits of regular exercise. Suddenly, he was sleeping 16 hours a day.

“I lost my taste and smell, lost 5% of my weight and had terrible, terrible headaches and stiffness in my neck,” Dr. Deshaies explained. “It hit me hard. I always tell everybody, take the worst flu you’ve ever had and multiply that by 100, and that’s a mild form.”

As a physician on the front lines and a patient who battled and has recovered from COVID-19, Dr. Deshaies advocates for the COVID-19 vaccine, encouraging others to trust its ability to protect people from the virus.

Thank you, Dr. Deshaies, for serving as a role model and making a positive impact in the lives of others.

Today, we ask you to join us in thanking our physicians

Our doctors make a tremendous difference in our lives, and this year on National Doctors’ Day, we honor them not just for the remarkable care they provide each and every day but also for serving on the front lines against COVID-19.

From battling the global pandemic to battling cancer, our physicians stood by our side during unforeseen challenges. They cared for us beyond our diagnoses and treatments to guide us towards our best health possible.
