Personalized Care, Advanced Recovery: Truist Investment Helps Open New Nursing Observation Unit in Charlotte

Leaders and partners from Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center and Truist gather to celebrate the opening of the new Nursing Observation Unit

A new Observation Unit is now open at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, made possible through a philanthropic investment from Truist. The unit was developed to improve patient flow and provide appropriate care for patients who require short-term monitoring and services.

The opening of the unit marks Phase I of the project, which includes 24 dedicated beds. These beds are specifically intended for patients whose anticipated length of stay is 24 to 48 hours or less. By creating a space designed for this level of care, the hospital is able to better align patient needs with the appropriate care setting.

More than just a physical expansion, the Observation Unit represents a meaningful step forward in how care is delivered.

The Observation Unit supports several key operational and patient care goals. It is expected to help reduce wait times, improve patient flow throughout the hospital, and ensure patients receive the appropriate level of care for shorter stays. In addition, the unit is designed to enhance the overall patient experience by providing a dedicated environment for observation-level care. Patients eligible for the Observation Unit are identified by NHICS and Central Bed Management (CBM) using defined criteria, with a focus on those who can be effectively treated and discharged within a short timeframe.

The unit is a secured, locked space located on the first floor of the hospital near the Caswell side of the building. Its location supports access to care while maintaining a controlled and safe environment for patients. The current 24-bed unit represents the first phase of a larger, planned expansion. Phase II is expected to be completed in October 2026 and will add an additional 24 beds. Once both phases are complete, the Observation Unit will include a total of 48 beds, doubling its capacity.

At Novant Health Foundation, philanthropic support continues to play a role in advancing projects that improve patient care. By investing in infrastructure that directly improves care delivery, Truist is helping ensure that more patients receive timely, efficient, and appropriate treatment—strengthening both the hospital system and the community it serves.
