Caroline’s Corner

The Comly family is giving Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital a remarkable gift: After losing their infant daughter Caroline to bacterial meningitis, they have generously led the funding to create a new facility within the walls of the hospital — one designed specifically for families going through the particular and painful challenge of caring for an acutely ill child.

Named in honor of their daughter, Caroline’s Corner will feature soft seating, TVs, work stations, food service, a shower and laundry — everything families need when they can’t go home because their loved ones are fighting for their lives. Through a partnership with Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, Caroline’s Corner will also provide support services for these families.

“What we really wanted was just a peaceful place that had peaceful colors — to make it warm and comfortable, as much like home as possible,” said Ginny Comly, Caroline’s mother. “I was thinking about a way to make it not feel like a hospital but to make it feel like a place where your mind could take you somewhere peaceful.”

Blume Family Playground

The Blume family has a long history of giving to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center Foundation. It began decades ago, after the loss of their 5-year-old daughter, Sherri, and has continued ever since: In 2019, Sherri’s brother, Steve, made a gift to Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital to support renovations at the Blume Family Playground.

“I remember when I was 12 asking God why he would take my sister at such a young age,” Steve said. “Looking back, I’ve seen all of the good that has come from her passing, and now I understand. I will continue to give as God blesses me to do so, and I encourage others to do the same.”

A holiday to remember

As we often say, donating toys isn’t just for the holidays, but this past holiday season, our community pulled out all the stops to ensure our patients at Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital had a holiday to remember. Thank you for bringing joy to their faces, even as they face unimaginable challenges. Your generosity is an inspiration.  

Secret Santa Radiothon raises $85,000

This past holiday season, Beasley Media Group hosted a Secret Santa Radiothon to support our patients at Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital. In total, six radio stations — KISS 95.1 WNKS, Power 98, Country 1037 WSOC, V 101.9 and WKQC, Christmas K 104.7 — raised $85,000.

“That was an amazing day of local radio,” said John Reynolds, Charlotte operations manager at Beasley Media Group. “Raising $85,000 in the middle of a pandemic speaks to the caliber of generosity we have in Charlotte and the power of local radio.”
