Wilmington’s First Community Care Cruiser Takes to the Streets

“Keep your eyes peeled for the big, purple bus – it’s like a big, purple hug.”

That’s advice from Elizabeth Forte, the transcultural health manager at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, on how to spot Wilmington’s first Community Care Cruiser. The cruiser is a 38-foot mobile health unit that will help to bring health care to community members right where they are, creating a new avenue of care for those who need it.

At 77, Nick Rizos was a local legend in Kernersville. The patriarch of a close-knit Greek family had immigrated to the U.S in his 20s seeking greater opportunities. He opened his first Olympic Family Restaurant in Kernersville in 1979. Rizos cooked, managed the business and loved talking with customers, especially about sports. He was an inspiration to his daughter Zoe, who worked in his diners growing up and now owns two restaurants of her own. 

Stargell Foundation Advances Dialysis Care

The Willie Stargell Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation in support of continued dialysis care for those battling kidney disease.
