Novant Health launched a new initiative to explore and celebrate the intersection of the arts and healing. The initial $500,000 investment aims to provide increased opportunities for the community to engage with art as a well-being practice. In addition to supporting local creatives, programming will focus the healing power of arts for patients and caregivers, including healthcare workers.

Research shows that engaging with the arts can significantly reduce chronic pain, stress and anxiety, while also improving immune system function. That’s why we’re committed to supporting local artists and bringing the transformative power of art to life across Charlotte.

Through The Art of Remarkable Care, we’ll engage patients, team members, and the broader community by installing meaningful art experiences in seven Novant Health facilities: Ballantyne Medical Center, Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital, Huntersville Medical Center, Matthews Medical Center, Mint Hill Medical Center, Presbyterian Medical Center, and Rowan Medical Center.

The Science Behind Art and Healing

The American Journal of Public Health highlights how consistent exposure to art, such as listening to music, has shown to strengthen immune responses. This aligns with our ongoing efforts to provide holistic care through various programs, including The Arts in Health program, which is supported by the Novant Health Foundation. This initiative currently serves patients at Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital and the Novant Health Cancer Institute.

Fostering Healing Through Community Partnerships

Novant Health has a long history of impactful partnerships with the local community. Our current partners include:

• The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art’s Art on Prescription program
• Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture
• Charlotte Ballet
• Charlotte Symphony including concerts at the Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic

Throughout the year, Novant Health will collaborate with Charlotte Is Creative and local artists to bring new programming to life, including visual and performance art, art therapy, murals and community events. These activities will reach vulnerable populations and enhance the well-being of our patients and their families.
