Athena’s Run 2017

Event Dates: September 30, 2017

Every seven minutes a woman is diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer.  The economic impact of treating these cancers is staggering, with more than $5 billion spent each year in the U.S. alone.  But the human toll is worse, with over 28,000 U.S. women dying each year. Although researchers continue to search for more cost-effective screening tools and better therapeutic options to detect, treat and prevent these cancers, additional efforts are needed to raise funding and elevate public awareness of gynecologic cancers.

The mission of Athena’s Run is to celebrate, honor, and lift up women affected by gynecologic cancers. The Annual 5K race at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, NC, raised $50,000 in 2016 to support education, advocacy, care and research of these cancers. Their vision is to end gynecologic cancers through prevention, early detection and effective treatment.

Athena is the goddess of war, wisdom, and heroic endeavor. She symbolizes the thousands of steadfast warriors battling gynecologic cancers every day. Together, we can change the course of these deadly diseases. Like Athena, we will not stop until the noble battle is won.

Founded in 2010, Athena’s Run has raised more than $400,000 for the Gynecologic Cancer Fund at the Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Foundation.
