Novant Health
System Chief of Staff
Senior Vice President, Corporate Health
Senior Vice President, Executive Leadership Development
"I’m thrilled to take on this endeavor because it is an opportunity to give back to our community in a new and creative way. As many of you know, I have long had a passion for increasing access to care among underserved communities. To continue that commitment, I will be raising funds for the Health Equity Fund at Novant Health honoring Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown. The fund works to ensure every person gets the healthcare they deserve, no matter their geographic location, race, gender or socioeconomic status. Everyone deserves access to high-quality healthcare, and I am dancing to help make that a reality across our community."

The Event

Her Dancing Partner
Kim's dancing partner is Maurice Mouzon, Jr. This is his sixth season with Charlotte Ballet and his first time Dancing with the Stars.
“We clicked from the start,” Kim said. “It’s his first year dancing for the Gala. He believes in the campaign, and he’s ready to make an impact in our community together. I could not be more thrilled with the pairing.”
Kim Is Dancing to Support the Health Equity Fund at Novant Health in Honor of Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown
We believe access to quality care is a right and should not be dependent on zip code, so Novant Health launched the Health Equity Fund at Novant Health to support strategic initiatives spanning the breadth of healthcare access, housing, education, addiction, mental health, economic development and so much more, including:
Honoring Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown
Ophelia Garmon-Brown, MD, M.Div., was a woman of many gifts and talents, but most of all, Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown served as a steadfast caregiver, champion, and advocate for the health and well-being of underserved Charlotte community members. A board-certified family practitioner, Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown served as SVP and chief community and wellness officer at Novant Health, and impacted many lives in our region and beyond. Through this Health Equity Fund, we have an opportunity to create a brighter future for families and children who reside in Mecklenburg County and continue the legacy, vision and vocation of Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown.
For those who did not know Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown, her legacy can best be summed up by her own words of wisdom: “We’ve all been placed on this earth to make a difference. We are here, not for ourselves – but we are here for others.”

Dancing to Support Health Equity
Kim Henderson welcomes a challenge.
She serves as system chief of staff and senior vice president of corporate health at Novant Health. She is active in a variety of philanthropic organizations, serving on the boards of multiple organizations, coordinating major fundraising events and mentoring the next generation of women leaders.
By any measure, hers is a full plate. But it didn’t stop Kim from tackling her latest opportunity: Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) of Charlotte.
Charlotte’s annual DWTS event brings together seven community and corporate leaders to raise funds for the Charlotte Ballet and a local charitable organization of their choice. Kim has chosen to support the Health Equity Fund at Novant Health honoring Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown.
Kim isn’t a total stranger to dance. She took ballet classes until the eighth grade and tried ballroom — once. But in the competition, she saw an opportunity to support two causes she cares about deeply — the arts and health equity — and to have a lot of fun in the process.
“For two decades, I have been both a team member at Novant Health and an active supporter of the arts community in Charlotte,” Kim said. “Dancing with the Stars is an opportunity to bring these two passions together and an incredible honor.”
Supporting The Health Equity Fund at Novant Health honoring Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown
The Health Equity Fund was born of the belief that every person deserves the chance to be healthy. However, a range of social and economic gaps can make good health hard to achieve or maintain. The purpose of the health equity initiative is to help close those gaps.
“I believe the Health Equity Fund is central to the mission of Novant Health,” Kim said. “We work to ensure every person gets the healthcare they deserve, no matter where you live, your race, your gender. Everyone deserves access and equity in healthcare.”
The Health Equity Fund supports strategic initiatives around healthcare access, housing, education, addiction, mental health, economic development and more. Cornerstones of the initiative include supporting greater access to vital health screenings and prevention services, funding mobile health units to provide critical services to uninsured and underinsured families, embedding more community health workers into our communities, providing behavioral healthcare and therapy, and expanding workforce development.
Kim is dedicating her DWTS performance and gift proceeds in honor of the late Ophelia Garmon-Brown, MD, M.Div. Dr. Garmon-Brown was a board-certified family practitioner and senior vice president and chief community and wellness officer at Novant Health who impacted many lives in the Charlotte region and beyond before she passed away in 2021. Supporting the Health Equity Fund provides an opportunity to create a brighter future for families and children in Mecklenburg County and push forward the legacy and vision of Dr. Garmon-Brown.
“My goal in this competition is to do the most good possible for our community. That’s what really fuels my fire and excitement for this opportunity,” Kim said.
Superstars with Superpowers
Kim comes to the DWTS challenge with a powerful team at her side. They are all dedicated to supporting each other to make this experience a resounding success for everyone involved.
“Everybody helping support this initiative is a superstar with a superpower,” Kim said. “They are bringing their unique skill sets to the table, remaining focused on our commitment to the Health Equity Fund and having fun every step of the way.”
Kim recently met her partner, Maurice Mouzon, Jr., which only served to elevate her excitement and readiness for this journey.
“We clicked from the start,” she said. “It’s his first year participating in Dancing with the Stars. He believes in the campaign, and he’s excited to make a big impact in our community. I could not be more thrilled with the pairing.”
