How hurricane experience came in handy for this COVID-19 doctor

Lawrence Mason, MD, is cool in a crisis. As the medical director of inpatient services at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center in Bolivia, North Carolina, he has been through plenty.

He was on the front lines after Hurricane Florence tore through the North Carolina coast in September 2018 and talks calmly about it – as if it were a pesky inconvenience rather than a catastrophe.

The pandemic has some parallels. “COVID-19 is sort of like a hurricane,” he said. “Just more prolonged.” Both require planning; a coordinated, team response; and rational thinking. The doctor is adept at all three.

And he shares credit with others. “Our respiratory care team members here are excellent,” he said. Not only in the care of patients – but in caring for their teammates. They made at least 20 face shields in different sizes using a 3D printer and gave them to Dr. Mason and other front-line workers. “They are so resourceful,” Dr. Mason said. “This was such an awesome, creative response.”

We thank Dr. Mason for his dedication to continuing to serve patients in a remarkable way and make a difference in our community.

You can help make a difference in the battle against COVID-19

The difference our doctors make in our lives is tremendous, and this year on National Doctors’ Day, we are honoring them not just for the remarkable care they provide each and every day but also for serving on the front lines against COVID-19.

From battling the global pandemic to continuing to combat the behavioral health epidemic, our physicians have stood by our side. They have cared for us beyond our diagnoses and treatments to guide us to our best health possible.
