Miles ahead but only a few miles away

When the new Novant Health Wallace Cancer Institute opened its doors on Aug. 12, 2020, the vision was clear: provide the Rowan County community with advanced cancer care that's miles ahead and only a few miles away.

As a supporter, you believed in the dream of a state-of-the-art facility right here in your backyard. Your gracious support helped us maintain our commitment over the last year, and we thank you for empowering patients from diagnosis through their treatment journey.

This facility was designed to help patients feel comfortable and cared for, beginning the moment they arrive, when a dedicated team member greets each patient at the door and guides them inside. By bringing medical oncology and radiation oncology together under one roof, we now provide convenient access and comfort for patients and families. We also offer patients and team members an uplifting escape with inspirational gifts through The Hope Boutique.

The leading-edge treatment, hope and compassion within the Wallace Cancer Institute have made this facility a transformative force for cancer care and a pillar in the community.

Your impact in radiation oncology.

Our radiation oncology clinic pairs patients with innovative therapies, resources and assistance. One of those therapies is a new treatment technique called stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), which administers very high doses of radiation to target tumors with precision. Our team members perform this treatment using our True Beam Linear Accelerator, a major improvement in our capability since it was implemented in December 2020. We are grateful for such innovative treatment options, which allow patients to stay close to home without being referred to other facilities.

Plans are in the works to offer stereotactic radiosurgery and nonsurgical radiation therapy to treat small brain tumors by the end of 2021. Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging will soon relocate to the institute, further expanding our suite of services.

Your impact in medical oncology.

Our medical oncology clinic welcomes patients at varying points in their cancer journey with 18 exam rooms, 20 private infusion rooms, an on-site lab and a Siemens 120 slice CT scanner for patient disease monitoring. This clinic has seen an average of 80 patients each day, offering personalized care from 30 team members, and our team grows more robust by the day. Our newest provider is hematology specialist Swetha Arshanapally, MD, and we are proud to welcome her to our team. Later this year, we will unveil on-site blood transfusions for patients as part of our commitment to keep their care close to home.
