By the Numbers

In support of systemwide mammography health equity long-term goals, Novant Health is taking deliberate steps to ensure that all women receive a mammogram when age or risk factors suggest, regardless of race or ethnicity.

When we analyzed the breast screening mammography data using a health equity lens, we noticed an opportunity with two of our fastest growing patient populations – our Asian and Latina patients.

We established a goal, simply stated, to increase the percentage of breast cancer screening mammograms among women of all races and ethnicities who get mammograms.

Celebrating Remarkable Stories

Join us in celebrating our breast cancer heroes and the remarkable impact made by Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Foundation team members right here in our community.

‘It always happened to someone else’

The first time Tammy Coulter was diagnosed with cancer, she had no signs or symptoms. A routine mammogram had turned up stage 0 ductal carcinoma — a cancer she couldn’t see or touch.

‘I went in for that mammogram, and I knew right away that something was up.’

Eight years ago, Susan Pfefferkorn went in for a routine mammogram at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center. Susan was no stranger to breast cancer. She’d lost a college friend to the disease back in the 1980s, and her mother had been diagnosed post-menopause. As a result, Susan had always been proactive.

‘I want the cancer gone’

Ashlee Payne Jenkins was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer at the age of 45. She’s always been a go-getter, and she approached cancer the same way: “Let’s get this done.”

‘I had no choice but to beat this.’

Dr. Patricia Flowers was religious about her mammograms. She had been since she turned 32. Then, in the summer of 2014, she found a lump in her breast. Her annual mammogram was just a few weeks away, but she decided to move it up.

‘A mammogram is the gift of life’

Karen Morning Roseboro, chief officer for choice and magnet schools for Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools, is celebrating four years as a breast cancer survivor, and her journey began with her first-ever mammogram at the age of 40.
